women financial world1 300x235 Top Five Women in the Financial World

Pinstripe suits, cigars, liquid lunches – there are countless stereotypes surrounding the financial world and its inherent masculinity. One of the most patriarchal arenas in our culture, the world of big business has been primarily populated by men. Yet, a quick scan through the lists of top executives proves that women are fast becoming major players in what can be an extraordinarily cutthroat industry.

1) Indra Nooyi

After completing her degree in public and private management at Yale, Nooyi worked her way up to chief executive officer of PepsiCo – the world’s second largest food and beverage corporation. She managed to increase company revenues by 72% and doubled net profits, making PepsiCo a stunning 5.6 billion annually. A member of many influential groups, she was awarded the “Most Powerful Woman in Business” award yearly from 2006 to 2010.

2) Andrea Jung

A self-described uninspired student, Jung gave up a career in law to become the first female CEO of Avon in the company’s 116-year history.  She revolutionized the failing company, bringing new products and new clients to a product line that had earned a rather laughable reputation. Not only is she the head of Avon, but she also finds the time to serve on the General Electric and Apple board. Despite her successes, she keeps her father’s advice – “cultivate the absence of arrogance and boastfulness”- in mind always, winning her both the respect and admiration of her peers.

3) Guler Sabanci

Although family connections were in place to help her rise almost effortlessly to her position of power in Turkey, Sabanci has worked incredibly hard to gain the respect and admiration of the people. The head of a 25-billion dollar business, Sabanci ensures that she devotes a good portion of her time to charity and the arts. In fact, she recently risked hosting an exhibition of Picasso’s nudes, despite the misgivings of Turkey’s Islamic government. In addition to this cultural milestone, she ensures donations of at least 1.1 billion to charity, garnering herself the coveted “Women of Distinction” award.

4) Irene Rosenfeld

Often described as retiring or ‘bookish’, Irene Rosenfeld is a business magnate who prefers to stay out of the public eye and in the company of her family. With degrees ranging from a bachelor in psychology to a doctorate in marketing and statistics, she has devoted herself to leading Kraft foods in a healthy, positive direction. Personable and dedicated, she completely restructured the business in America, Canada and Moscow while managing to keep her family and keeping the well-being of her company a top priority.

5) Dong Mingzhu

Although less personable than the previous women, Mingzhu has the undying respect of her over 40,000 employees. She has gone beyond a traditional ‘managerial’ position – setting instead a strict personal example for her workers to emulate. As head of Gree Electrical Appliances, she reformed both business practices as well as human resources in the company. She claims to have never taken a day off in 20 years and yet ensured that her employees were given 24 weeks of maternity rather than the 12 that is endorsed by the Chinese government.

It is inspiring to learn how women are changing the reputation of the financial sector. Rather than wallowing in hostile take-overs or worse, their excessive salaries, these women are all ensuring that they give some of what their companies earn back to the community. It’s unfortunate that so many women have been raised, knowingly or not, oblivious to their potential when it comes to business and finance. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they have never seen ‘a place’ for themselves in that environment. However, looking at the list of achievements these powerful women have accomplished is proof enough that a place does exist and it’s an important one.

4 Ways a Hobby Can Boost Your Career

scrapbooking 4 Ways a Hobby Can Boost Your Career

Whether you work from home, or at a traditional brick and mortar job, finding a hobby can benefit your career in multiple ways. If you find yourself working too much, or it just feels like it, then a hobby will definitely benefit you.

Perhaps you find yourself running in circles with your career, and never seem to get to the next level. I find myself afflicted with the dreaded writer’s block once in a while. But, I realize that it’s often due to working too much, and not playing enough.

If the wheels are spinning, but you seem to be going nowhere, a nice diversion, such as a hobby might be just what you need.

The Hobby

Before I get into the reasons why I believe a hobby can boost your career, I want to touch just a little on what a hobby is, or should be.

A hobby is something you pursue that will give you some enjoyment, or a way to relax. It could be anything from how to learn to play the piano, to collecting stamps. However, it doesn’t really matter what the hobby is, as long as it’s something you enjoy.

Now, let’s get to the different ways that a hobby can boost your career.

1.  Provides a Balance

A hobby can provide balance to your life. If you are working all the time, whether it’s out of the home or in the home, not having something to counter all the work is increasing the risk of burnout.

The work continues when you get home, even if it’s not your 9-5 duties. There is the housework, paying the bills, cooking dinner, and if you have kids…well, that’s a job in itself.

Fitting in a hobby, even if it’s only an hour a week, gives you a mental break from it all. If you get that mental break, it can rejuvenate your mind and body, which leads to better production. Imagine going in to the office with a renewed spirit, and all you could accomplish with it.

2.  Builds Confidence

Finding a hobby that you are good at can build up your self-confidence. With a boost in confidence, you can achieve greater success in all aspects of your life, including your career.

Self-esteem can make a huge impact in every area in life, including personal and especially parenting.

3.  A Great Stress Reducer

We all have stress in our lives, even if we don’t realize it. If we let it build up without having some form of outlet, the stress can lead to illness. When we are sick, we are less productive, if we make it into work at all.

In the past when I have had a hobby or two, I found it to be a great way to unwind and de-stress. I haven’t taken the time for hobbies lately, but that has to change, as I can see the need for it.

4.  Great Source of Networking

Some hobbies will allow you to meet new people, such as classes for ceramics or scrapbooking. You might choose to join a fitness club or a team sport, which will also allow you to meet new people.

This is great for networking, and spreading the word about your work or business. As a writer, I have had a couple offers for work just by talking to people about what I do.

Have your business cards handy, and ask others what they do. It’s a great source for new opportunities, including a career change if you are looking for something new.

Finding the Right Hobby

If you have never taken up a hobby, it might seem a little overwhelming to choose one, especially if there is any cost involved. However, if you choose something that you are sincerely interested in, and make sure it fits well with your lifestyle and budget, you are on the right path to choosing the right hobby for you.

Here are some ideas:

*        Softball

*        Bowling

*        Scrapbooking

*        Collecting

*        Musical Instrument

Not all of these hobbies will meet all 4 points mentioned above, but they don’t have to. Any of them on their own will help boost your career. For example, I have plenty of work to keep me busy. So, for me, reducing stress is why I want to pursue a new hobby.

Personally, I am looking into taking up piano lessons again. I took a few when I was in my teens, but I didn’t follow through with it, primarily because I was a teen.

I found the following quote by Frank Zappa to be very applicable to this topic, and why I am leaning towards piano; ‘Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.’

I love music, so for me, it will provide a great source of stress relief, as well as enjoyment. It also allows me to practice any time I want, rather than sticking to a schedule. Did you know you can even learn music online at http://www.playpiano.com? This might be important to you, if you are constantly driven by a schedule.
