Maintaining an Exercise Routine while Working from Home
It can be easy to overlook self-care and making time for the things you enjoy when you work from home. After all, your home life, your work life and your family life all exist in the same place. When you set your own schedule, jumping from work to home responsibilities can happen seamlessly; making it hard to differentiate where your work life ends and your home and personal life begins. However, finding time for personal activities, especially exercise, is important to maintaining work-life balance, even when your work and home life collide. Here are some ways to ensure that you maintain a consistent exercise routine when you are working from home:
Just like everything else you have to do in your day, you should schedule time for your exercise. Don’t do it if you “have time.” Make sure you have the time by including it in your daily or weekly schedule. Doing so will help you manage your time more efficiently, and it will ensure that you actually get out to engage in physical activity since it will be part of your “to do” list. It’s like making an appointment with yourself. Don’t be tempted to break these appointments to make time for other work. Exercise is an important part of your day, and it should not be neglected.
Leave the House
Getting out of the house for your exercise will help break your mental focus and make it easier for you to transition into a new activity. If you decide to stay home for your exercise – by doing workout videos or running on a treadmill – you may be more tempted to “just finish this one thing” before you work out and so on and so on until you have completely run out of the time scheduled for your exercise. A change of view and some fresh air will also help you to feel more refreshed when you return to work. When you exercise, try going to the gym, taking a walk around your neighborhood, or visiting a local trail.
Meet a Friend
Many studies have shown that those people who make a date to meet a friend for exercise are much more likely to maintain their exercise routine. Knowing that someone is expecting you to be at a certain place at a certain time will increase the likelihood that you keep the date. Spending time with a friend can also make exercise more enjoyable. It also gives you the opportunity to socialize while you engage in physical activity, allowing you to multitask.
Change it Up
If you get stuck in an exercise routine, it will start to feel like a routine. Exercise shouldn’t feel like work. Try out a variety of activities so that you don’t get bored and so that you keep your body guessing. Change up traditional cardio activities by trying out running, walking, swimming, and cycling. Or try for other “fun” activities that don’t feel like exercise, such as indoor rock climbing, dancing, or ice skating. Even activities like gardening and yard work can count towards your daily quota of physical exercise.
Make it a Family Affair
Exercise can be a great way for you to get in some good quality time. Take your spouse and your kids with you on a walk, take a visit to a local lake for some fun water sports, or join a nature hike with a local conservancy group. You’ll all get to enjoy some healthy physical exercise, and you’ll be able to spend quality time together as a family.
Exercise should never be one of the optional activities on your list, especially when you’re stuck inside all day working from home. Make time in your schedule for exercise and engage in a variety of activities to ensure that you make it a healthy habit.
