Working from home can be tremendously advantageous. The commute couldn’t be any easier, there is no dress code but the one you impose on yourself, and the overall sense of freedom is unparalleled. However, if you don’t have a home office set up, you may have trouble actually getting down to work. The distractions of home can drag productivity down to a standstill, for those who don’t have a dedicated work space. One of the biggest advantages of working away from home is that it takes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to get work done. Get the best of both worlds by setting up a home office for your work.

First, take a look around the house and see if there is any extra space that you could dedicate to a home office. Avoid making this a multi-purpose room. You want to have a place where you can go to work undisturbed at any time of the day, and this won’t be possible if your office doubles as a living room. If you have an unused room (perhaps a guest room that never gets utilized), consider converting one of these into your home office to save money.

If there is really no space in the house, don’t give up hope just yet. You can build your own home office if you have enough space in the back yard. You may even have something already built that you can convert, such as an unused tool shed, play house, or garage. If there’s still nothing suitable for your office, then it’s time to start being an architect. Look for a level area that is quiet and free from traffic–as far away from the kids’ playing areas as possible is the ideal setting. Once you’ve found a good spot to build your office, start drawing up some blueprints.

Think about how much space you are going to need in your new office. The idea is not to build more than you need, because this is going to be an expensive and inconvenient project and you want to avoid complications as much as possible. Start with a floor plan and then start thinking about the various amenities you’ll need–lighting and electricity at the very least. You may want to build windows into your office, or you might prefer to be closed off. Remember things like insulation as well–your office likely won’t be heated and you don’t want it turning into an icebox in the winter months.

Once you have all of your plans outlined, it’s time to get started on construction.
