How to Keep Your Family Happy and Your Sanity on a Long Flight
Whether you’re going on a business trip or a great vacation, your plane ride is simply the way to get there, right? Well, if you know what you’re doing, the time you spend in the airport and on the plane can be just as interesting as the rest of your trip.
Play a Game
If you plan ahead, you’ll have a number of games you can play while on the plane. While you may not have Internet access, if you bring along a handheld device, such as a Gameboy, you have a number of games at your disposal. In fact, the newer devices even allow for you to download the games, so you don’t even need to carry the cartridges with you.
Become More Social

Whether you’re a social person by nature, or you’re working to be easier with others, a good time to do this is while you’re on a trip. Get to know the people sitting around you. Start up a conversation about where you’re going, or where you’re coming from. From that starting point, the conversation will flow. Whether you’re there on business or headed to some great destination you found on Groupon getaways, you never know the interesting people you’ll meet on the ride.
Pretend to be Someone Else
If you’re up for a little social experiment, try being someone else for a while. Make up a new personality for yourself, and be that person fully. While this is a difficult thing to do, it is a fun way to pass the time, trying to see if you can keep it up for hours while meeting new people.
Take a Nap
When you have a long flight, one of the best ways to pass the time and keep your sanity is to take a nap. Whether you need a sleeping aid to help you get there, or you fall asleep easily, this is a great way to make sure that the flight goes by quickly. Just make sure that you don’t fall asleep while others are trying to talk to you, unless that’s the personality you’ve come up with for yourself.
Write Something Interesting
Do you like to journal? Are you in the middle of the next great American novel? A good way to spend some time while you’re flying is by pulling out pen and paper. It may get a little messy if you hit turbulence, but otherwise, this is a great option for anyone who is getting bored. You can write about anything, from how the day has gone to the new friends you made so far on your trip. If you’ve always been interested in writing a novel, this is a perfect time to start.
Long flights get boring. You need to make sure to bring enough items to keep you occupied. On top of this, interacting with others who are on the flight keeps both of you occupied, and helps you make new friends. With so much to do, it’s easy to keep your sanity, no matter how long your flight is.
