5 Ways to Make Working at Home More Productive
When it comes to working at home, it’s important to find ways to become more productive. Thankfully, this may be easier than you might think. Here’s 5 quick tips on how to make working at home more productive for you:
Maintain a home office.
Working from home doesn’t mean working from bed. By keeping a routine of going to your home office when working, you can trick your brain into focusing on work issues when it’s time to get busy. Be sure to only use this space for work, and to keep it free from distractions in the house.
Dress for the occasion.
It’s nice to be able to work without putting on extensive makeup or doing your hair, but don’t treat your in-home job too loosely when it comes to what you wear, or you might inadvertently work less seriously than you intend. Our subconscious minds associate dressing up for work with getting things done, so it’s important that we at least go through a routine of dressing in work clothes of some kind to get our minds in gear.
Back up everything.
Perhaps the least obvious thing anyone thinks to do differently once they start working from home is treating their data differently. When you work in an office, there is usually a dedicated IT department that will ensure your files are backed up in the event that an accident occurs. When you work from home, you need to recreate that IT professionalism in at least that one respect. Keep both local and online backups of all work files regularly.
Don’t do two jobs at once.
No matter how tempting it may be to try to take care of kids while you work in your home office, it just isn’t going to happen. You must focus on one job at a time, and that means you can’t be a babysitter in addition to your regular job. Hire a nanny to come into your house if you must, or at least use a daycare service if your kids aren’t in school. It may cost more, but the extra productivity you’ll gain will make it worth the expense.
Finally, be sure to relax.
If you’re a workaholic, working from home can sometimes make your home life a 24/7 job. Try to separate work from relaxation by keeping regular work hours and being sure to give yourself plenty of off time. Some of the best ways to relax involve massage chairs or a long warm bath. Try looking online for bathtubs on sale not only will it help you relax, but that will in turn help you to become more productive.
Whatever methods you choose, it’s important to always strive for efficiency when working from home. It needs to be treated like a real job even if you technically could work in your pajamas. One study out of Stanford shows conclusively that when done correctly, working from home can not only be more enjoyable, but also far more productive than working in a corporate office. Just be sure to do it responsibly, and you’ll be a far better worker overall.
